Doxycycline 10% is the medicine of choice when Ornithosis is the cause of sudden death, recurrent respiratory disease or breeding failure in canaries and finches.Ornithosis refers to the disease of canaries, finches and related birds caused by Chlamydophila Psittaci. In parrots the same disease is called Psittacossis or Chlamydia infection.
Doxycycline/Megamix treatment is recommended for birds with a history of infertility and poor breeding results. Infertility may be the only sign of Ornithosis. Doxycycline/Megamix treatment administered during breeding may often result in a rapidly improving fertility rate.
Doxycycline can also be used to self-diagnose Ornithosis in aviaries where bird health is not right and when the cause of the problem cannot be found without veterinary help. A short three day course of Doxycycline should be administered to aviaries with respiratory symptoms, ill thrift and where infertility levels are exceptionally high. Ornithosis is confirmed if the birds improve noticeably within two days. A course of Doxycycline/Megamix should then be continued for up to 30 days. All surfaces must be disinfected once a week during the treatment using a quaternary ammonium disinfectant like (PROTECTOR).
