Sulfa-AVS is the medicine of choice for E.coli infections. It is a combination of Sulfadiazine and Trimethoprim and lifts the form of canaries with an E.coli infection but depresses the form of canaries without the infection.
E.coli infections are a common cause of poor performance. The diagnosis of the illness is made by microscopic examination of a fresh dropping. When E.coli is present, the droppings change from watery green to nutty brown within one day of sulfa-AVS, but remain green when there is no E.coli present. The fancier who has no access to a bird veterinarian or microscope can use this information to self-diagnose an E.coli infection.
Sulfa-AVS (1/4 teaspoon per litre of drinking water made fresh daily) is mixed into the water vigorously prior to feeding. It is highly palatable to canaries and other birds ensuring that a very good dose is taken. Tepid rather than cold water allows the medicine to dissolve properly and stirring before feed times is recommended. Sulfa-AVS depresses the form of the fit canary when no E.coli infection is present and it should only be used when an E.coli infection is present.
